What Is a Kebarung?

The name says it all: kebaya plus kurung. From the kebaya, it borrows a shaped front and a longer, elegant line. From the kurung, it keeps a closed, modest construction and a relaxed fit through the body. The result is looser than a regular kebaya, longer than most kurung, and easy to wear for hours.

Labuh, Moden or Klasik?

You'll see a few names for the same family of styles.

• A kebarung labuh has the longest top, falling well below the hips for the most coverage and the most traditional look. Aruna is cut in this longer style.

• A kebarung moden keeps the hybrid shape but uses lighter fabrics and fresher prints for everyday wear.

• The klasik version stays closest to the original early-90s silhouette, a clean line in plain or softly patterned fabric.

How to Wear It

Pair a plain top with a printed tudung, or keep a printed piece calm with a solid tudung in one of its colours. For Raya and kenduri, a kerongsang at the neckline adds a festive touch. Many women also swap the matching skirt for a kain batik, a pairing that suits this style especially well.

Caring for Cotton and Linen

Both fabrics breathe beautifully in our weather and get softer with every wash. Wash in cold water with similar colours, turn printed pieces inside out to protect the pattern, and dry in the shade so strong sun doesn't fade the colours. Cotton linen creases naturally, which is part of its relaxed charm. A quick press on medium heat while the fabric is still slightly damp keeps it crisp for a formal day.
