Baju Kurung Kedah
The Story
Baju Kurung Kedah
Almost every Malay family album has one photo of Opah in her baju kurung Kedah: a short top, a kain that let her move freely, and an ease that made it her favourite outfit, whether she was in the kitchen or at a kenduri. We kept that easy shape and dressed it in songket, shantung silk, brocade and lace, so the style you remember from home can be the one you wear this Raya.
What Is Baju Kurung Kedah?
Often simply called baju Kedah, it's a kurung with a short top that ends around the hips instead of falling to the knee. The style is believed to have been influenced by the short blouses of southern Thailand, Kedah's northern neighbour.
Long known as the pakaian tradisional Kedah for women, it was traditionally cut without the pesak and kekek panels of the long Johor-style kurung, which made it light and practical for everyday wear. Because the top is shorter, more of the kain shows, so the pairing between top and skirt becomes part of the look.
Kurung Kedah Tradisional, Klasik & Opah — and Where Moden Fits In
When women picture a kurung Kedah klasik, or the baju kurung opah they grew up seeing at home, they're thinking of the original: a loose top in soft cotton with small flowers, worn with a kain batik. It's comfortable, modest and made for long days.
A kurung Kedah moden keeps the same short silhouette but changes the finish. The cut is neater, and the fabrics are richer, so it works for Raya, kenduri and evening majlis as well as home. Our collection sits between the two: a standard, relaxed cut true to the klasik shape, made in festive fabrics that photograph beautifully.
Our Designs, From Soft Sheen to Full Shine
Pick by how dressed-up your day is. The list below goes from the softest finish to the most festive.
Sophia — shantung silk, the quiet one
For the woman who wants elegance without sparkle. Premium shantung silk has a soft, natural sheen and a slightly textured hand. It's polished enough for a wedding guest outfit, yet easy enough for Friday at the office. Sophia comes in our widest everyday palette, from Grey and Teal Blue to Mustard, in sizes XS to 3XL.
C Luxe — brocade with a round collar
For a clean, classic look with a little richness. C Luxe pairs a woven brocade pattern with a simple round collar. Shades include Navy Blue, Olive, Maroon and Black, in sizes XS to 2XL.
Tiara — songket with star flowers
For Raya morning and family photos. Tiara is our baju kurung Kedah in songket, with a scattered star-flower motif woven through the fabric. It catches the light without looking heavy. Choose from Dark Emerald Green, Blue Black or Black, in sizes XS to 3XL.
Safira — lace and songket, the showpiece
For nikah, tunang and the biggest days of the year. Safira layers lace over songket for our most festive design. The top is slightly longer, at 28" to 30". Colours range from Magenta and Teal Green to Maroon, in sizes XS to 3XL.
Why Women Keep Coming Back to the Short Top
You can move freely. Kneeling to salam, sitting on the floor at a kenduri or carrying a little one is easier when the top stops at the hips.
It suits petite frames. Showing more of the kain can make you look taller and more balanced.
It's lighter in the heat. A shorter top means less fabric, which helps on a long, warm Raya day.
It's modest without being bulky. A relaxed, standard cut still covers the hips, so you look neat without feeling wrapped up.
Pair It With Kain Batik, Songket or Its Matching Kain
The kain changes the whole mood of the outfit.
The matching kain gives a coordinated, Raya-ready look for open houses and family photos.
A kain batik is the classic Opah pairing. A Sophia or C Luxe top over batik feels relaxed and nostalgic, perfect for balik kampung.
A kain songket turns a plain top into a ceremonial outfit for nikah or bersanding.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Kedah style has a short top that ends around the hips and a relaxed cut. A baju kurung moden has a longer top that follows the body more closely.
Yes. Songket and lace designs like Tiara and Safira are made for Raya, while silk and brocade designs like Sophia and C Luxe work for both Raya and smaller occasions.
They're often confused because both have a shorter top. A kurung is a closed top, while a kebaya opens down the front. → Baju Kebaya
It's the old-school way of wearing it: a loose, short top over a kain batik, just like our grandmothers wore at home and at kenduri. Our Sophia and C Luxe tops recreate that look when paired with batik.
Sophia, Tiara and Safira go up to 3XL, and C Luxe goes up to 2XL. The relaxed cut also gives you more room than a fitted moden style. If you're between sizes, WhatsApp us your measurements.
