Why Songket Belongs on a Sampin

For generations, songket has been the cloth of ceremony. Its name comes from the Malay word sungkit, to pick, after the way gold or silver thread is picked into the weave so it seems to float across the fabric. Terengganu and Kelantan are its traditional heartland, and in 2021 UNESCO recognised Malaysian songket as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage. Worn at the waist, a sampin songket turns a simple baju melayu into an outfit fit for a royal occasion.

Fold it along its natural shape after wearing and store it flat with a sheet of tissue between the folds, so the thread doesn’t snag. Avoid wringing, and iron on low heat on the reverse side with a cloth on top to keep the shine.
