Baju Kurung Songket
The Story
Baju Kurung Songket
Songket was once woven only for royalty. Today it's the fabric Malaysian women choose when a day deserves to be remembered: the first Raya morning, an akad nikah, a family portrait that will hang on the wall for years. Our baju kurung songket brings that gold and silver shimmer into a modern cut you can actually move in, from salam to the last plate of rendang.
What Makes Songket, Songket?
Songket isn't a colour or a print. It's a weaving technique. Extra threads of gold or silver are inserted between the base threads so they seem to float across the background, creating a pattern that catches the light from every angle. The name comes from the Malay word sungkit, meaning to pick, after the way weavers pick out each thread to build the design. Terengganu and Kelantan are its traditional heartland, and in 2021 UNESCO inscribed Malaysian songket on its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
How to Read Corak Songket: Penuh, Tabur and Border Motifs
Before you choose a piece, look at how the motif is spread. It changes the whole feel of the outfit.
Songket penuh covers the fabric almost entirely in metallic pattern. It's the most ceremonial look, often reserved for bridal and royal dress.
Bunga tabur scatters small flowers or stars evenly across a plain background. It shimmers without overwhelming, which is why it suits a full outfit worn for hours.
Border motifs concentrate the pattern along the hem or edges, with classic shapes like the pucuk rebung triangle framing a quieter body.
Himani and Ardina both use bunga tabur, so the fabric reads as rich in photos but never feels heavy on you.
Gold Thread or Silver Thread?
Every colour in this collection is named for its thread, such as Black Gold or Royal Blue Silver, so you know exactly what you're getting.
Choose gold for warmth. It glows against deep shades like Blue Black, Magenta and Red Chilli, and photographs beautifully in warm indoor light at a kenduri.
Choose silver for a cooler, more modern finish. It sharpens jewel tones like Emerald Green, Navy Blue and Dark Purple, and pairs easily with silver kerongsang and grey or pastel tudung.
Handwoven or Ready-to-Wear: What You're Paying For
Handwoven songket from a traditional loom can take weeks or even months to finish, and it's priced as an heirloom. Our ready-to-wear pieces use songket-woven fabric made on modern looms. You get the same floating-thread shimmer, sewn into a complete outfit in standard sizes, at a price that lets you wear songket every Raya rather than once in a lifetime.
Our Baju Kurung Songket Designs
Himani
Our signature piece: songket bunga tabur in a regular fit with a 34-inch top, in eight colourways from Magenta Silver to Black Gold. It's the safest choice if you want songket that flatters without fuss.
Riza 2.0
Bolder contrast, with deep bases lifted by gold or silver thread, in shades like Blue Black Gold, Dark Purple Silver and Magenta Gold.
Ardina
The light one. Soft Yellow Silver and White Gold make it a quiet favourite for akad nikah, tunang and daytime Raya visits.
All three are cut as baju kurung moden, with a neater line than the traditional cut, in sizes XS to 2XL.
Caring for Your Songket
Turn the garment inside out before washing, and iron on the reverse side at low heat so the metallic threads keep their shine. Store it folded with a sheet of tissue between the layers, so the threads don't snag on anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Our pieces are made from songket-woven fabric produced on modern looms, which keeps the metallic floating-thread effect at a ready-to-wear price. Traditional handwoven pieces are a separate, heirloom-level craft.
Both use woven patterns, but this weave is defined by metallic gold or silver thread floating over the base. Brocade can be woven in any thread, often in tone-on-tone patterns. Browse our Baju Kurung Brocade collection to compare.
Deep shades with gold thread, like Blue Black Gold or Magenta Gold, are popular for Raya because they glow in family photos. For akad nikah, softer options like White Gold or Soft Yellow Silver work beautifully.
Yes, if the motif is light. Bunga tabur designs like Himani use scattered patterns rather than full metallic coverage, so the fabric stays softer and lighter than a fully patterned piece.
Wash it inside out and iron on the reverse side at low heat. Avoid wringing it, which can pull the metallic threads.
