What Makes a Baju Melayu

The traditional outfit has three parts: a long-sleeved baju, matching trousers, and a sampin, the short woven cloth wrapped around the waist. A songkok completes the formal look. What sets one style apart from another is mostly the neckline, and that’s the first decision you’ll make.

Two Necklines, One Heritage

Cekak musang — the stand-up collar

Cekak musang has a raised, stand-up collar about one finger wide, fastened with five buttons: two on the collar and three down the chest. It looks structured and formal, and it’s the style most men reach for at weddings and official events. Teluk Belanga — the collarless classic

Teluk Belanga has no collar at all. Instead, the round neckline is finished with fine stitching called tulang belut, the eel’s spine, with a short slit fastened by a single button. How to Wear the Sampin the Right Way

The neckline also decides how the sampin is worn, and getting it right is the detail people notice.

• With cekak musang, the baju is worn over the trousers and the sampin wraps around the outside, sitting over the top so the collar and buttons stay the focus.

• With Teluk Belanga, the sampin is traditionally worn under the baju, tucked so that only its lower part shows below the hem. This is often called dagang dalam.

Colours That Work for Raya, Nikah and Jumaat

• Deep shades like Maroon, Navy Blue, Black and Dark Teal Blue look rich in photos and suit evening events.

• Greens are a Raya favourite. Emerald Green and Teal Green photograph beautifully in daylight, while Dusty Green is softer and easy to match with a family theme.

• Lighter tones like Nude, Rose Gold and Mustard feel fresh for morning visits and outdoor majlis.

• For an akad nikah, many grooms choose Nude or a soft neutral so the outfit matches the bride without competing with her.
