What Is a Baju Kurung?
The baju kurung is the traditional dress of Malay women: a loose, long-sleeved blouse that falls to around the knee, worn over a long skirt known as the kain. Unlike the kebaya, which opens down the front, the baju kurung is a closed tunic, cut to drape softly rather than cling. In Malaysia today, "baju kurung" refers to the women's outfit, while the men's version is called the baju Melayu.
It is one of the oldest Malay clothing styles, and it is still part of everyday life — worn for Hari Raya, weddings, office days and family gatherings across the country.
A Short History of the Baju Kurung
Early baju kurung were longer and looser than what most women wear today. In 1866, during the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor, the Teluk Belanga style was introduced: collarless, with a finely hand-stitched neckline. It became the reference point for what we now call the traditional baju kurung.
Over time, regional cuts developed in states such as Kedah and Pahang. By the early 1980s, the baju kurung moden had emerged, bringing Western-influenced tailoring to the classic silhouette. That balance of heritage and modern fit is the space Carlanisa designs for.
Types of Baju Kurung
Baju Kurung Moden
The modern baju kurung keeps the familiar top-and-skirt silhouette but is tailored closer to the body. It is usually cut without the traditional side panels, giving a cleaner line. Our baju kurung moden designs use details like A-line skirts, lace and embroidery, making them easy to wear from the office to Raya open houses.
Baju Kurung Kedah
Originating from the northern states of the Peninsula, the baju kurung Kedah has a shorter, looser top that ends around the hips and a simple Teluk Belanga-style neckline. Traditionally, it was paired with a batik skirt. Its relaxed shape makes it one of the most comfortable cuts for long Raya days.
Baju Kurung Pahang & Riau
Also known as baju kurung Riau-Pahang, this style reflects the historic ties between Riau and Pahang. It is recognised by flared side panels joined with a hanging underarm gusset, a defined waist and, traditionally, a cekak musang collar fastened with seven or nine buttons. Its structured, elegant look makes it a favourite for weddings and formal events.
Baju Kurung Teluk Belanga (Johor)
The collarless Johor style with a finely embroidered neckline, worked in stitches such as tulang belut, mata lalat or insang pari. Today it is considered the standard traditional baju kurung.
Baju Kurung Cekak Musang
Almost identical to the Teluk Belanga, but with a short standing collar and buttons at the neck, for a neater, more formal finish.
Pesak and Kekek — The Details Behind a Traditional Cut
Two details define a traditional baju kurung. The pesak are extra panels on each side of the top that give it room and ease of movement. There are two main types, pesak gantung and pesak lepas. The kekek is a small gusset under the arm that lets the sleeves move comfortably. Classic cuts such as the Pahang style keep these elements, while the baju kurung moden usually leaves them out for a sleeker, more fitted line.
Choose Your Fabric
Baju Kurung Songket
Songket is a Malay fabric traditionally handwoven with gold or silver threads that float above the base weave in floral and geometric motifs. Its name comes from the Malay word sungkit, "to pick", after the weaving technique. Once reserved for royalty, it is closely linked to Terengganu and Kelantan, and Malaysian songket was inscribed on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021. A baju kurung songket remains the natural choice for nikah, tunang and Hari Raya.
Baju Kurung Lace
French lace layered over a lined base gives a soft, romantic finish, popular for engagements, nikah and evening receptions.
Baju Kurung Brocade
Rich woven patterns with a gentle sheen. Brocade gives structure and an occasion-ready look without the weight of full songket.
Baju Kurung Plain
Clean, solid-colour pieces for office and everyday wear, easy to pair with a printed tudung.
Baju Kurung Sulam
Embroidered details on the neckline, sleeves and hem that add texture without a busy print.
Baju Kurung for Every Occasion
Hari Raya
Recent Raya seasons have moved in two directions. One is rich jewel tones like emerald green, royal blue and maroon. The other is softer, more photogenic shades like teal, rich brown, dusty blue and nude. Minimal baju kurung moden with French lace or fine embroidery has also overtaken heavily embellished designs. Explore our Baju Raya 2027 collection and our Raya colour guide.
Nikah and tunang
Off-white, nude and soft pastels in lace or songket give a refined, ceremonial look.
Weddings and formal events
A structured baju kurung Pahang or a brocade piece holds its shape beautifully through long events.
Office and everyday
Baju kurung moden and plain designs in breathable fabrics keep you comfortable all day in Malaysia's heat.
